The American Flag Project

With everything going on in our crazy world, the flag means so much to so many.  The American flag projects freedom and community. It’s also a symbol of strength and unity for our nation and for the small town we love to call home. We are a proud community. We work together to pay tribute to our independence and to the individuals who sacrificed for our freedom. Celebrations may have been called off, but South Carolina still ranks near the top when it comes to patriotism. According to a study released by WalletHub, our state ranks as the 10th most patriotic in the country. Among the findings SC ranks:

  • 1st in Civics Education Requirement
  • 3rd in Average Number of Military Enlistees per 1,000 Civilian Adults
  • 6th in Veterans per 1,000 Civilian Adults
  • 7th in Active Duty Military Personnel per 100,000 Civilian Adults

The project started as a grassroots effort by neighbors in Gaffney’s historic district headed by Gloria Geary and Jolene Setliff. According to Ms. Geary, “We have tremendous support for our project beginning with Veterans Day November 11th. The great part is that you don’t have to do anything. Just sign up for the project and wake up to your neighborhood or street covered in flags!”

The City of Gaffney Fire Department will distribute flags six times per year. The flags are 100% American made, locally sourced and are commercial outdoor quality. They are 3’X5’ and will be displayed on a 9’ pole in your yard or business. CHAPS will manage the project, sign participants, procure, store and maintain the flags. The flags will be displayed during the following holidays:

  • Veterans Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Flag Day
  • Independence Day

Flags will be placed before the holiday and removed afterwards. Another holiday may be substituted in event of severe weather or significant emergency. A sleeve to hold the flag will be placed flush with the ground and capped off when not in use. If you wish you may specify the location of the sleeve a marking/survey flag will be provided upon request. All donors will receive a tax deduction letter via email as CHAPS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Flags can serve as an honorarium or memorial  and may be placed at another residence or business location if you prefer.  If you want your flag to be placed at location other than your billing address, please indicate so when you submit your signup form.

Initially, we are beginning with the City of Gaffney coverage area but hope to expand the program into other fire department jurisdictions. The cost is $60/year and is fully tax deductible. You may sign up annually or automatic annual renewal subscription (both above).   You may also call the museum at 864-489-3988 with questions, to sign up or to be a block captain.  “We are excited to see our town show its patriotism and it’s great to be a part of this amazing project.” said Dollie Blanton, Vice President of CHAPS. “Your participation is key in making The Gaffney American Flag Project a success!”
